Matt Black opens up about his struggles with mental health and the importance of reaching out for support

For Matt Black, one half of the pioneering music duo Coldcut, and co-founder of Ninja Tune Records, music has always been a way to connect with the world.

But behind the creativity and success, Matt has faced ongoing mental health challenges — something he believes many in the music industry can relate to.

Growing up with parents who struggled with depression, Matt has seen firsthand how mental health can shape a person’s life.

If my mental health isn’t good, I can’t function, I can’t create, I can’t get out of bed, I can’t be a benefit to my family or to humanity or anything else.

His own journey has been about finding ways to cope and keep creating. It’s a stark reminder of the pressures faced by so many in music.
